Jersey RFC stirred not shaken
Saturday 22nd October 2005, 12:00AM BST.
JERSEY RFC head coach Dai Burton believes that the squad he has picked are ‘full of confidence’ for today’s away game to Sidcup, even though the club have lost their last three games, one at home and two away.
We played well last week,’ he said, ‘despite losing, and we won’t make the same basic errors against Sidcup.
We need to close up shop a little bit, but our try-scoring rate is third from the top in our division.
‘We’ve scored 19 tries, Sidcup have scored eight and are at the bottom of the league (London South II).
Even though we’ve lost our last three games, we’ve scored 12 tries in defeat which is pretty good going.
‘Most other teams would have won their games with such a high try count.
We’ve simply got to stop leaking more points than we score.’ As usual, he has had to make changes for this game against Sidcup, but one of them is definitely a bonus as play-maker and captain Steve O’Brien returns at centre.
Ian Henderson moves to second row allowing Harry Bonn, who played exceptionally well against London Nigerian last week, to retain his slot at flanker.
Veteran forward Richard Vetier is on the bench as is teenager Jamie Allan; both players are expected to get on the park at some stage during the match.
If recent results are anything to go by, Jersey will score points – but the Sidcup coach will be rubbing his hands knowing that the visiting side have leaked in over 200 points from seven games played this season.
