Return of the soapbox?

Saturday 22nd October 2005, 12:00AM BST.

SOAPBOX politics could return to St Helier for the Deputies’ elections.

The Constable of St Helier, Simon Crowcroft, wants to bring back the soapbox to liven up the campaign for the ten St Helier seats and to offer candidates more of a chance to speak to their electorate.

He wants to set up a soapbox for candidates on Saturdays, and possibly on weekdays, so that they can talk to town workers on their lunch breaks.

Mr Crowcroft is keen to support a vibrant election in town.

‘The idea of a speakers’ corner in St Helier has been floating around for some time,’ he said.

‘The Deputies’ elections seem to me to be the perfect opportunity to see whether there are a sufficient number of speakers and listeners out there to designate such a location in town.’ ‘I would envisage having the soapbox in place on the Saturdays running up to the elections on 23 November.

But if the interest is there, we could provide it at lunchtimes on other days as well.’
