Sharp faces Hardy battle for laurels
Tuesday 25th October 2005, 12:00AM BST.
IT’S all change in the Mini Transat – and Phil Sharp still has everything to play for.
After around 2,500 miles of single-handed racing in the second leg from Lanzarote to Brazil the lead has once again changed with long-time front-runner Douget Corentin reining in and then overtaking Alex Pella.
But only three miles separates them at the head of the 72-strong fleet as the finishing line at Salvador beckons.
The lead duo has pulled away with third-placed Isabelle Joschke now trailing by 91 miles.
Jersey’s Phil Sharp on Le Gallais 419 has established himself in sixth with a 26-mile lead on seventh-placed David Lancry.
If things stay roughly as they are then Sharp is still in with a chance of a podium finish when the leaders reach Salvador around Thursday morning.
First leg winner Corentin will take first place and Pella looks set to take second as he finished only 9 1/2 hours behind Corentin in the first leg and is far enough ahead of the next challenger.
The excitement lies in the battle for third place between Old Victorian Sharp and Frenchman Adrien Hardy.
Hardy is currently fourth, 29 miles ahead of Sharp.
But the overall positions will be decided on time difference over the two legs and after the first leg Sharp has a three-hour lead on Hardy, who came in fifth.
If Sharp can continue to close the distance between himself and Hardy he will finish less than three hours behind him and claim the bronze medal spot.
