Man with cruelty convictions seeks pig unit go-ahead

Thursday 27th October 2005, 12:00AM BST.

PLANS for an intensive pig rearing unit in St Saviour from a businessman with two recent convictions for animal cruelty are today being considered by Environment and Public Services.

The Planning case officer is recommending that Alfonso Luis’ application is refused and the committee is also being advised to serve an enforcement order to remove all illegal structures erected last autumn in Field 707, Rue de la Fréminerie, within three months or sooner, in the interest of the pigs and poultry currently kept on site.

Late last month Mr Luis, the owner of Alfonso’s Catering Meats, was banned from keeping sheep for a year after leaving four beasts tightly tethered without water in Field 707 on 31 July this year.

He was also fined £800.

He is currently in the second year of a five-year ban from keeping rabbits for causing unnecessary suffering to 36 rabbits.
