Budget out next week
Saturday 29th October 2005, 12:00AM BST.
FRESH for his re-election, Finance and Economics president Senator Terry Le Sueur will unveil the 2006 Budget next week.
His committee’s proposals for taxation and States spending also come soon after a number of positive economic developments.
Announcements over the last few months have indicated an economic turnaround, with inflation within the States target, strong indications of pending economic growth and signs that States spending is gradually coming under control.
On Tuesday Islanders will find out whether duties on fuel, tobacco and alcohol are to increase, and what changes to the tax structure will be made over the coming 12 months.
And they will find out whether ‘chancellor’ Senator Terry Le Sueur, who successfully defended his Senatorial seat ten days ago despite having been the architect of unpopular tax increases, will continue the ‘tax and don’t spend’ policies that have sought to balance States income and expenditure while fighting inflation by taking money out of the economy.
