Hurricane hell
Saturday 29th October 2005, 12:00AM BST.
TWO more Islanders have spoken about the hell of being imprisoned for six days in a Mexican convention centre as Hurricane Wilma wreaked havoc in Cancun.
Jimi Porteous (25) and his girlfriend, Lisa Le Sueur (32), described how people were starting to get sicker and sicker as the conditions deteriorated.
Although they didn’t know it at the time, they could not have been more than yards from Dave and Jenni Ward, of St John, who told their story in yesterday’s paper.
Both couples say the experience was horrendous and an unimaginably frightening experience.
And yet, Jimi and Lisa, who live at Millbrook, say they would go back to the paradise resort at the drop of a hat – especially because of the fantastic way the Mexican people responded to make sure their guests were provided for as well as possible.
By the fourth day of their ordeal, the floor was water-logged and the threat of disease became all too real.
Jimi said it was pulling together to make the best of the awful conditions and ‘the old Scottish banter’ that got them through the long days.
‘I just started telling lots of jokes all the time,’ he added.
‘I felt like a prisoner.
You could only eat when they let you.
We couldn’t get outside.
On the third day we were allowed to go out and get some fresh air.’ He also came up with an acronym that summed up their mood at the time.
Wilma, a note they have kept as a memento, said Will I Leave Mexico Alive?
