Skateboard park doubts
Saturday 29th October 2005, 12:00AM BST.
DOUBTS have been raised about whether a skateboard facility should be built at the People’s Park but an alternative venue in a warehouse on New North Quay is being considered.
The Channel Islands skateboarding association and the Constable of St Helier, Simon Crowcroft, have been told by Health Protection they have serious concerns about the suitability of People’s Park and that they would not support the plans.
Mr Crowcroft said that it was now less likely that the skateboard plans for People’s Park – which have been opposed by residents – would go ahead.
The project to find a suitable venue for the facility has been co-ordinated by Deputy Ben Fox, the vice-president of Education, Sport and Culture, who has responsibility for youth issues and also sits on St Helier Youth Committee.
He has now identified a large warehouse on the New North Quay owned by the States and currently leased by the Harbours and Airport Committee to Ferryspeed.
That company would be likely to relocate to a site near the Elizabeth Terminal if Harbour’s £11 million redevelopment plan, turned down by Planning, wins its appeal.
