‘We got out but want to help those still there’

A COUPLE who were trapped in a conference centre while Hurricane Wilma raged around them want Islanders to raise money for people in the area affected by the natural disaster.

John and Margaret Adkin were celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary at Moon Palace Nizuc Hotel in Cancun, Mexico, when the hurricane struck.

They had enjoyed a celebratory meal with friends on Tuesday 18 October, but by Thursday they were with 2,500 others sheltering from the force of the winds which ripped roofs off luxury hotels and knocked out windows.

Mr Adkin said: ‘On Thursday morning the wind was blowing and they were preparing the hotel, taking the coconuts off the trees so that they couldn’t come through the windows.

We packed our bags, left them at the hotel and were told we were going to spend one night in the shelter.’
