Fair Play back on VAT campaign

Saturday 19th November 2005, 12:00AM GMT.

FAIR Play has relaunched its VAT campaign after receiving many complaints about businesses charging VAT-equivalent prices to Jersey’s consumers.

With just five shopping weeks left to Christmas, the weekly consumer column has restarted the campaign and is stepping up the pressure on retailers.

Last year the popular campaign had a huge impact on shops and businesses in the Island.

The campaign reached its pinnacle almost 18 months ago when it persuaded Sky Television to take off the VAT for customers in the Channel Islands, following immense pressure from the column and from hundreds of readers.

Elsewhere, Fair Play’s distinctive red campaign posters can still be seen in the windows of those shops in the town centre which take off the VAT from UK recommended retail prices.
