Great Daynes savages Tower into final
Wednesday 30th November 2005, 12:00AM GMT.
A SUPERB striker’s performance from St John U18′s Stuart Daynes reaped four goals at Les Quennevais last night – and put his side through to the Tregear Cup final.
St John led three times in their 5-2 victory over fellow Lloyds TSB Division I side First Tower, but they needed extra-time to clinch their spot at Springfield, where they will meet the winners of the St Paul’s v Jersey Wanderers semi-final.
Daynes’ first came from the penalty spot following a foul by Tower ‘keeper Elliot De Sousa, with Tower not equalising until early in the second half through James Jones.
Steven Muir put the northerners ahead from close range, but Tower levelled again with a blistering drive from Adam Speight.
Luke Bechelet in the St John goal distinquished himself as Tower enjoyed their best spell of the match.
However, the extra 30 minutes belonged to the tall, powerful, but still nimble Daynes, and all three of his strikes were of the highest quality; the first clipped home following a ball through the middle, the second lifted over the keeper after a cross from the left; and the last a magnificently flighted effort into the far corner from the edge of the box.
