Interest high for community sport role

Thursday 1st December 2005, 12:00AM GMT.

THURSDAY is the final day for Community Sports Development Officer applications.

Education, Sport and Culture are looking for a person to help organise activities for communities, similar to the scheme currently run for youngsters of the Clos Gosset area by St Paul’s Football Club.

The full-time job was advertised recently with football attached to the position.

Sport and Leisure assistant director Derek de la Haye said: ‘Football is still the hook for youngsters but the position is not exclusively football based.

A good deal of interest has been shown for the job and that is very pleasing.

‘We have funds available provided by the Building A Safer Society Strategy and this will enable the post-holder to develop the opportunities.

‘The aim is to set up programmes similar to the Clos Gosset scheme by seeking to engage youngsters in sporting activity after school, in the evenings and at the weekends.

‘It may not be football but other sports, we’ll just have to wait and see what materialises.’ The successful applicant will work in conjunction with community police, the youth office and the Island’s sports development officers.
