Heroin ‘is easy to get’ in jail

HEROIN is as readily available on the main wing at La Moye Prison as it is on the streets of St Helier, the Royal Court were told yesterday.

Advocate Michael Haines told the Inferior Number that support for addicts is inadequate at the prison, and that drugs are easy to get hold of.

He made the claims while defending long-term addict Michael Moreira on charges of breaking and entering and illegal entry – crimes, Advocate Haines said, were carried out to feed a £200 per day heroin habit.

Moreira (28) escaped the 18-month prison sentence the Crown were seeking, but was ordered to complete two years of probation and 240 hours of community service, and told he would inevitably go back to jail if he reoffended.
