Accies and ‘Pies slip in promotion race
Monday 5th December 2005, 12:00AM GMT.
WITH the weather claiming both Coca-Cola Combination Division I fixtures on Saturday the scene was set for the Division II sides to take centre stage.
Sporting Academics, however, fluffed their lines in losing 2-0 to a José-Manuel Vieira double at Les Quennevais.
Victory would have the Accies level top with the inactive St Ouen.
There was a goal-fest elsewhere at Les Quennevais, with Jersey Nomads emerging 4-3 winners over Magpies.
Ben Doherty (two), Jason Pierre and Paul Starkey netted for the winers, with ‘Pies’ goals coming from Matt Pamplin, Steve Cumming and Paul Duffy.
Nomads victory puts them joint second in the table, on 17 points, with Magpies.
Jez Startup scored a late clincher for St John away to St Martin/SCF.
Also on target in a 3-2 victory were Chris Robinson and Aaron Parkinson, the Junior Island player lashing in a 35-yard free-kick.
Three matches survived in the Reserves Division II, with Portuguese Club’s second string sealing a good day, with a 3-1 victory over St Clement Reserves.
Valerio Figueira knotched a hat-trick, with Saints’ reply coming from Richard Moulson.
The three points were enough to take Portuguese to the top of the table on goal difference from St Brelade.
The other two matches were drawn, but far from goal-less.
Jersey Nomads and St Martin/SCF reserves shared six goals, with the latter’s Leon Cole grabbing his hat-trick in stoppage time.
Nomads’ scorers were Rob Mason, Kristian Robinson and Dean Heslop.
Neil Bredonchel hit the net twice to earn Magpies Reserves a 2-2 result against St Brelade Reserves at the Airport.
Saints’ goals were claimed by Andy Battrick and Scott Boydens.
Pies’ ‘Fair Play’ defender Carl Walker, a former St Brelade player, owned up to missing a penalty when his side were 2-1 up and then setting up Saints’ late equaliser by conceding a spot kick for handball.
The only other Combination match to survive the weather resulted in Grouville C marching on in the Securicor Locksmiths Trophy.
They won a preliminary round match 5-1 away to St Peter C, with Alex Buesnel claiming the third hat-trick of the day.
Karl Stoodley and Liam Kelly were also on target for the easterners.
