Four apply to operate mobile phone services
Tuesday 6th December 2005, 12:00AM GMT.
FOUR telecoms companies have applied to run mobile phone services in Jersey.
The Island’s competition regulator, the Jersey Competition Regulatory Authority, announced today that Colt Telecommunications, Bharti Global Ltd, Cable & Wireless Jersey Ltd and Jersey Telecom have submitted applications for licences.
Currently Jersey Telecom is the Island’s only mobile provider.
The licensing process is designed to bring more competition into the market, following the incorporation of States-owned JT as a private company two years ago.
The decision about which companies will be granted licences lies with the UK regulator, Ofcom, although the companies will also need a licence from the regulator in Jersey.
