Light a candle for Asia

Tuesday 6th December 2005, 12:00AM GMT.

JERSEY Side by Side are asking Islanders to hold their own personal memorial for the victims of the Asian tsunami, which killed an estimated 250,000 people.

As the first anniversary of the disaster approaches, the charity has suggested that people should light candles in their windows on Boxing Day as a simple way of showing that the victims have not been forgotten.

The organisation is also planning a candlelit vigil in St Helier on Saturday 17 December.

Charity chairman Mike Wavell believes that many Islanders will have been deeply moved by last night’s BBC programme about the tsunami which featured shocking new footage of the waves hitting Banda Aceh, Sri Lanka and Thailand.
