Kerry Coombs-Goodfellow won her seventh Jersey ladies singles title and also retained her doubles title with partner Lucy Burns, in the Jersey Closed Badminton Island Championships this week.

Three further titles will be decided tonight, at the New Gilson Hall – the men’s singles and doubles, and the mixed doubles.

The tournament started on Monday, when Coombs-Goodfellow retained her singles title without dropping a set.

The former Nottinghamshire singles champion and Island Games multi gold-medallist won the group comfortably with, as expected, her toughest opponent being fellow county player Kim Ashton, who she defeated 11-6, 11-3.

The Coombs-Goodfellow/Burns combination, who are unbeaten so far in the county campaign, beat their closest rivals, Ashton and Dimple Mukhi, 15-3, 15-6, in the ladies doubles.

Tonight’s men’s singles final is between Mark Constable and Chris Guillochon.

Constable, the former National singles champion, moved to the Island in the summer and is in a different class to anyone in the Channel Islands, and while Jersey-born Guillochon will undoubtedly give his all, he will know that, realistically, points will be at a premium.

On his way to winning his group Guillochon, a previous runner-up in the event, produced a good victory over fellow county player Clive Dunford.

The men’s doubles final features last year’s winners, Gavin Carter and Clive Dunford, taking on the veteran partnership of Ian Coombs-Goodfellow and Anton Kriel, both pairs winning their groups without dropping a set.

The mixed doubles promises to be a real humdinger too, as the Constable/Burns partnership takes on Kriel/Kerry Coombs-Goodfellow.
