Nurse charged with theft
Saturday 10th December 2005, 12:00AM GMT.
A PSYCHIATRIC nurse could be struck off after allegedly taking more than £65,000 from a patient.
Theresa Ann Thorp (66) is accused of taking the money while employed as a community psychiatric nurse by the Island’s health service between July 1994 and June 1999.
She has been called to appear in front of a committee from the Nursing and Midwifery Council on Thursday in Portland Place, London.
Council press officer Roisin Wilson said that Ms Thorp faced two charges – the first of allegedly taking £22,322 between 1 July 1994 and 31 June 1999 and the second of allegedly taking £44,734 in 1997.
‘Under the code of conduct you cannot accept money from patients,’ said Ms Wilson.
‘This will go in front of a committee of council members who will look at the evidence and give her an opportunity to put her side of the case and make her own representation.
‘With a serious charge you could be struck off, and if you are not on the register then you cannot practise,’ she added.
