Smoking ban ‘will cut deaths’
Monday 12th December 2005, 12:00AM GMT.
BANNING smoking in public places will substantially cut the 200-a-year smoking-related death toll in the Island, says Jersey’s new Medical Officer of Health, Dr Rosemary Geller.
She said she was pleased to learn that the hospitality industry supports a complete ban on smoking in all workplaces.
A ban on smoking in public eating places will become law early next year as the first phase towards achieving a total ban in public places.
She said that smoking was ‘public health enemy number one’.
She said: ‘About 200 Islanders die each year as a result of smoking.
Banning smoking in public places will reduce this toll substantially.’
