JFA throw open doors to prospective managers

Tuesday 13th December 2005, 12:00AM GMT.

THE Jersey Football Association are to advertise the vacant position of senior and under-21 team manager, following last week’s resignation of Dave Matthews.

The JFA Council made the decision to spread a wide net at their monthly meeting last night.

Once the advertisement has been placed interviews will take place early next month.

JFA president Charlie Tostevin said: ‘Council have decided to advertise the position and hopefully interviews will take place early in January.

‘We have had no applications at all but through the media we know people are interested so we hope they all apply given the importance of the position.’ Former Island manager Peter Vincenti has indicated that he would like to become Island manager for the second time.

Vincenti’s cards are already on the table, with the JFA knowing he will be applying for the position.

Former Jersey U18 manager Jon Welsh said: ‘Peter and I spoke last Friday and I told the JFA president that Peter would be putting his name forward.

There is no application process at the moment so that’s as far as it has gone.

‘Former manager Dave Matthews was quite right with many of the things he said last week after standing down.

Too much is expected of them; they have so much work to do apart from managing and coaching the team.

‘I know how much work is involved because I did it at U18 level.

People haven’t got that kind of time to commit to the position anymore and if the JFA want quality managers to come forward it has to be sorted out.

‘They have not had a commercial manager for several years now and one is desperately needed.

Someone sorting all the kits out would be a big help and I’m sure the JFA will be discussing matters and trying to sort things out.

‘Maybe a general manager needs to be appointed to help the right managers and coaches to put their names forward?’ The job description for the Island manager, however, is not expected to change.

Tostevin added: ‘We review the job description when a position becomes vacant because we always learn from what’s just been done.

If it needs modification it will be done but personally I don’t think it does.’
