Top CI awards hit by lack of funding
Wednesday 14th December 2005, 12:00AM GMT.
AFTER three years and three Guernsey winners, the glitzy, televised CI Sports Personality of the Year award is not to continue in its current form.
Wallace Barnaby, the organisers of the event in association with Channel Television, failed to come up with the necessary funding to stage the 2006 event.
‘This year we have all worked hard, unfortunately without success, to encourage others to become a part of the team, offset some of the considerable costs and help secure the event’s long-term future, said primary organiser Darren Duquemin.
‘The gala awards ceremony planned for Beau Séjour in January won’t take place but Channel Television are investigating ways of keeping the awards themselves going.
Who knows, the black-tie aspect might return in future years,’ he added.
‘We were all very proud of the first three Total Oil CI Sports personality events.
The one thing we did not want to do was host a watered-down event that did not reach the high standards that we’d already set and guests would expect.’
