Police chief calls for drinking time reform
Thursday 15th December 2005, 12:00AM GMT.
PUBS and clubs should be open later into the night to help reduce drink-related disorder and crime, says States police chief Graham Power.
But if opening hours are not to be extended, he wants an improved public transport system to get revellers off the streets and home safely.
And he says that Jersey may do well to look at how the Isle of Man has tackled the problem – there is now a last time, 1 am, for people to enter premises but no formal closing time.
Mr Power was speaking after the initial results of the move to 24-hour drinking in England and Wales showed incidences of drink-related disorder appear to be falling, only a fortnight or so after longer opening hours were introduced.
