Referendum on town quarry?

Thursday 15th December 2005, 12:00AM GMT.

ST Helier residents could go to the polls over the future of Westmount Quarry.

The Constable of St Helier Simon Crowcroft wants to hold Jersey’s first referendum on proposals for a supermarket, sheltered housing, multi-storey car park and amenity space on the site, which has been vacant for nine years.

Tesco have been in talks about operating the supermarket, and the Constable wants to sign a deal with developers Royston Leigh to bring the project forward.

‘I am looking into the possibility of holding a referendum to find out whether the parish as a whole wants the option that we are putting forward,’ said Mr Crowcroft.

‘I am seeking legal advice as to whether that is possible.’
