Aid worker dies of malaria
Friday 16th December 2005, 12:00AM GMT.
A CHARITY worker from Jersey who devoted his life to helping poor communities in Africa has died after contracting malaria on a visit there.
Michael Doublet (48), whose funeral takes place today, is believed to have become infected with the disease on a two-week visit to The Gambia in November.
He died in Jersey’s General Hospital within four days of showing the first symptoms of feeling unwell.
Mr Doublet, who was educated at FCJ and d’Hautrée, died two weeks ago tomorrow.
For the last two years, the trained carpenter dedicated his life to helping the children and people of The Gambia.
He had been based in the west-African country after visiting there on an Overseas Aid trip with the States a few years ago.
He had been taking malaria tablets for a lot of his stay, but was unable to take them long-term because of the side effects.
