JFA chief calls time

JERSEY Football Association president Charlie Tostevin is to stand down at the end of this season.

After six years in the top job in Jersey football, following six as vice-president and six before that as secretary, Tostevin is calling it a day because he no longer feels he has the time to give the position the full commitment it deserves.

Tostevin said: ‘I hope people don’t think it is because of criticism of the past week.

It has nothing to do with that; it has been in the back of my mind for some time now.

‘I wasn’t going to stand this year but after a lot of thought and prompting I decided to give it another 12 months and people knew that.

‘Years ago a president was just a figurehead.

Today there is so much extra work as the president has two full-time administrators to look after as well.

‘It really is a question of time, I’m busy with work as well and I feel that because of a lack of time I can’t give it the commitment it deserves, so it is time to let someone else have a go.

‘I’ve done and will continue to do everything to the best of my ability.

My vice-presidents have known my feelings for a number of months now and there isn’t a way round it now.

‘I knew my time was coming to an end soon so this a reason why we set up a working party earlier this season to oversee the whole structure of the JFA at present to see if we could make any changes.

‘We have another meeting soon and hopefully we will have some conclusions to make the next steps forward.

‘I’ve really enjoyed the position and I regret having to step down.

There have been many highs and a few lows – winning all four Murattis two years ago was a great achievement and will not be surpassed while being president in the Association’s Centenary year has been a great honour.

‘Today there is a lot more responsibility in the president’s position too.

The FA grant money we receive is fantastic and it’s a big concern that it is spent right.

‘Everything has grown enormously in the last five or six years.

It’s been enjoyable as well as hard work and I’m honoured and privileged to have held the position and I believe I’ve done a reasonable job.’
