Cineworld fire safety is criticised after evacuation
Wednesday 21st December 2005, 12:00AM GMT.
SOME film-goers say they were left ‘amazed by the lack of safety and guest care’ when a fire alarm went off at Cineworld last night and audiences had to find their own way out in the dark.
The alarm went off just before 10 pm, while Islanders were watching Christmas blockbusters like King Kong and The Chronicles of Narnia.
But members of the audience have said they could barely hear the alarm and were left in the dark for up to ten minutes before being asked to leave.
Films continued to play as audiences evacuated in the dark, before being allowed back into the cinema, having missed up to ten minutes of the film they paid to see.
The States of Jersey Fire and Rescue Service have received a fire safety complaint about the matter, and station manager Clive Russell said this morning they would be investigating it and working with cinema management.
Paul Dixon was one of those watching King Kong.
He said: ‘While the fire alarm went off in another part of the building, no one moved, so we waited for instructions from staff.
For almost ten minutes we waited and no one came to evacuate us so we presumed it was a false alarm.
Then, after ten minutes, a girl came in and shouted up to everyone that we needed to go.
The movie did not stop playing, so only half the cinema moved.’
