Parish football: Long-distance winner sends Saints through

Wednesday 21st December 2005, 12:00AM GMT.

FORMER Junior Island captain Peter Vincenti scored a spectacular winner for St Martin in the Trinity Shield last night.

Trinity had just made it 1-1 at Les Quennevais when, from the kick-off, the ball was passed back to Vincenti, who, seeing the goalkeeper off his line, scored from just inside his own half.

St Martin won the preliminary round tie 2-1 to set up a home quarter-final tie against St Peter on Tuesday 27 December.

Trinity player-manager Martyn Stratford said: ‘Peter was the only player on the pitch capable of doing something like that; what a great player he is – he just lashed it and it flew over our goalkeeper’s head.

‘It was a fine piece of skill and with just a couple of minutes left it gave us little time to get back.

‘There were four and a half minutes to go when Richard Russell prodded St Martin ahead.

Young Richard Parker was then denied an equaliser by the inside of a post but shortly after we did draw level with a great strike from Ramsey Cudlipp from 18 yards.

‘It was an open game with some good flowing football and both teams had chances to have won it.’ Although Trinity fielded a more physical and mature side the youthful St Martin, with only two players aged over 23, matched them in endeavour and running.

n Both sides were well supported by families and friends.

The Connétable of St Martin, John Germain and parish deputy Bob Hill attended as did St Martin FC president Neville Ahier – who, like Hill, lives in Trinity!
