Call for shopping on every Sunday

Thursday 22nd December 2005, 12:00AM GMT.

SUNDAY shopping should be allowed all year round, according to St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft.

He believes this month’s Sunday opening hours have proved once and for all that the law needs changing.

He intends to begin talks early in the new year with the relevant authorities to try to persuade them to allow restricted opening on Sundays.

But the historically controversial suggestion has frustrated some store owners, who say they would be totally against such a move.

Meanwhile, the Chamber of Commerce is reporting a strong trading month despite fears that the new tax regimes would slow consumer spending.

Mr Crowcroft, who is a member of a steering group looking at introducing Sunday trading, thinks he has a strong case because ‘the pros finally outweigh the cons’.
