CONTROVERSIAL allegations about the running of the Animals Shelter will be the subject of discussion tonight at a special general meeting of the charity that runs the Shelter in St Saviour’s Road.

The meeting is being held to receive the conclusions of a report carried out by former financial regulator Roger Bignell into allegations made by Sindy Boléat and others about the running of the organisation.

However, the full report is not going to be presented because it contains references to both written and verbal allegations that continue to be the subject of ‘intense legal discussions’, according to the president of the committee of the Jersey Society of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (JSPCA), Jonathan Morley-Kirk.

But new member Deputy Bob Hill said a letter sent to Mrs Boléat’s lawyer by JSPCA vice-president Arthur Morley in recent days indicates that the committee has prejudged the views of society members.

The Deputy, who only became a member of the society yesterday after having met Mrs Boleat and listened to her concerns, said the letter says the committee has come to conclusions that he feels should be left for the membership to judge.

Quoting Mr Morley’s letter, the Deputy said: ‘To avoid doubt, the committee accepts Mr Bignell’s recommendations and acknowledges that there is no evidence of financial irregularities, that the financial records and contracts of the society are appropriate and that there is no evidence that the constitution has been breached.’ The letter goes on to say that the JSPCA committee hopes to draw a line under the matter.
