Top dogs have to scrap

IN Division I of the Island table tennis league this week CCC A beat St Joseph A 7-3, mainly through the efforts of Paul Marshall and Trevor Lefebvre who enjoyed three wins each.

However, they were both pushed to a fifth game by Dale Brockbank, although they both beat Tom Quinn 3-1.

Marshall also beat Mark Brockbank 3-1 while Lefebvre won 3-0, 17-15 in the final game.

Reserve Malcolm Gallichan lost all of his matches, while taking a game from Dale Brockbank.

Marshall and Lefebvre went on to beat the Brockbanks 3-0 in the doubles.

Also in Division I Pegasus beat St Mary 8-2.

While Bruce Gallichan didn’t drop a game both Clive Hansford and Andrew Gallichan lost to Erik Le Brun.

Andrew Gallichan just beat Darren Le Brun 3-2 and then won against Ken Le Brun 3-1.

Hansford beat both Le Bruns 3-0.

The Gallichans went on to beat Erik and Darren 3-1 in the doubles.

Meanwhile, in a much closer competition, St Joseph B drew with CCC B 5-5.

Marcin Jurkiewicz beat Eugene Ellis 3-2 and Bob Vincent and Kay Lefebvre 3-0.

Jurkiewicz then combined with Tomasz Stochel to beat Ellis and Lefebvre 13-11 in the fifth game of the doubles.

Simon Brindle secured a 3-0 win against Lefebvre to gain the draw.

For CCC Ellis and Vincent both beat Brindle and Stochel.

Meanwhile, in Division II, St Joseph A beat CCC B 8-2 with Ryan Brockbank setting the tone by winning all three of his games, while Chris Corfield beat Luke Walker and Mick Davy 3-0 before losing 3-1 to Malcolm Gallichan.

Jim Brockbank had 3-2 wins against Walker and Gallichan but also lost 3-1 to Davy.

Josh Band saw off Jonathan Quérée 3-0 before retiring with a shoulder injury.

In the doubles, Ryan Brockbank and Corfield beat Gallichan and Walker 3-1.

Victoria B, now seventh in the division, beat a weakened St Mary 9-1.

Paul Moisan beat Fred Coote and Vic Roberts 3-0 and Peter Cornic 3-2.

John Vibert beat Coote and Roberts and came back from two games down to beat Cornic, too.

The only success for St Mary was Fred Coote’s 3-1 win over David Hole.

Victoria A, meanwhile, beat CCC C 10-0, with Ed Le Quesne winning his three matches without dropping a game.

There were also wins for Alan Richardson and Rex Cardy before Le Quesne and Richardson beat Richard Stilwell and Paul Hargreaves in the doubles.

CCC A, who top the division, beat Pegasus B 8-2 with Norman Quérée helping to seal the win without dropping a game.

Mark Liron also beat Sam Motto and Stephen Dupays, 3-0, before he lost 3-1 to Scott Cassin.

Jonathan Quérée then beat Cassin 3-0 and Motto 11-8 in the fifth but lost 3-0 to Dupays.

Liron and Jonathan Quérée beat Cassin and Dupays 3-0.

Further down the table, St Joseph B beat Pegasus A 7-3.

For Pegasus Trevor Motto beat Matthew Robin, Natasha Marriott and Craig Roberts, all 3-0 but, with his team mates unavailable, had to concede the remaining matches.
