Islanders thanked for £2.15m lifesaver
Friday 23rd December 2005, 12:00AM GMT.
ISLANDERS raised a total of £2,150,000 for the relief of those affected by the Boxing Day tsunami, a letter from the British Red Cross to the Bailiff has confirmed.
The final total, which includes the £500,000 grant from the Overseas Aid Committee, was raised by a wide range of activities and efforts by Islanders of all ages in a compassionate response to the tragedy.
The money was collected through the Jersey Asia Relief Appeal launched by the Bailiff, Sir Philip Bailhache, on Wednesday 29 December, with Mike Wavell taking on the role of chairman of the fund-raising committee.
In his letter to Sir Philip, British Red Cross chief executive Sir Nick Young said that words could not adequately describe how much suffering will have been eased for the casualties of this unprecedented disaster from the fund-raising undertaken by the people of Jersey.
This morning Mr Wavell said that the response to the tsunami by Islanders had been amazing, not just in monetary terms but also in the immense effort they put into raising the money.
