Candles are lit in tsunami victim’s memory
Wednesday 28th December 2005, 12:00AM GMT.
JERSEY’S only Asian tsunami victim, Pete Harrison, was remembered on Boxing Day in a simple but touching ceremony at his memorial in Havre des Pas.
About 30 people, including the Constable of St Helier, Simon Crowcroft, gathered in Allix’s Shipyard at 12.20 pm to light candles and lay flowers at a bench dedicated to the memory of the 46-year-old Liverpudlian who lived in Marett Road.
Alan de la Haye, Mr Harrison’s oldest friend from the near 30 years he lived in Jersey, said it was a fitting tribute to a good mate.
‘He would have been highly embarrassed about it – he was not like that but it was a good turnout by his friends for him and for his family, in particular his sister, Liz Winrow, and brother Tony, who found it very hard over Christmas,’ he said.
Mr Harrison was on holiday in Thailand with his Thai girlfriend, Toi.
His body was identified in March and his funeral took place in Jersey in April.
Toi’s body is still missing.
Mr Harrison’s family took his ashes home to Liverpool.
