No white Christmas – but snow could be on the way this week, warn the Met Office

JERSEY may have missed out on a white Christmas Day, but as we head towards New Year it looks like the Island could see some snow showers.

Islanders awoke this morning to icy roads following a snow shower at 5.30 am.

The snow stuck in some of the country parishes, and caused slippery surfaces on the roads.

The Met Office say that temperatures are expected to to fall below zero tonight, potentially causing ‘some disruption’ tomorrow morning.

Senior forecaster John Searson said that Christmas Day had been relatively mild.

‘It felt particularly nice because of the lack of wind,’ he said, but he added that the weather was now turning.

‘The temperature has generally fallen over the last couple of days.

‘There were hail and snow showers yesterday and snow showers and wintry showers – a mix of snow, sleet and hail – are expected today.

Overnight, the temperature will fall dramatically and tomorrow morning there is the potential for some disruption if we get snow.’ Last month Islanders saw a mixture of weather, with more sunshine than usual.

There were 110 hours of sunshine recorded at the Airport, which is 35 per cent above the average of 81 hours for November, and there was also less rain than usual.
