Splashing out at Christmas
Wednesday 28th December 2005, 12:00AM GMT.
HOW many JEP readers can say they wake up on Christmas morning desperate for a festive dunk in a freezing sea?
Almost 200 Islanders carried on the tradition by taking the plunge at either Havre des Pas or Ouaisné on Sunday.
At just 10นC the temperature measured two degrees colder than last year.
Carole Penfold (61) organises the annual Jersey Swimming Club event at Havre des Pas.
She said: ‘We had 135 people going in and about 400 watching.
I never go in.
I’m not that daft.
‘It gets bigger every year.
If numbers keep growing, I’m going to need a tanker full of mulled wine to satisfy next year’s swimmers.
‘People astound me.
One man said he has been doing it every year since he was a boy – and Christmas would not be Christmas without it.’
