Barriers will be lifted in 2006

Thursday 29th December 2005, 12:00AM GMT.

BARRIERS will replace scratchcards in car parks next year – but Transport Minister Guy de Faye does not yet know when the work will be done or how much it will cost.

Scratchcards will still be used for on-street parking, but public car parks like Sand Street and Minden Place will move to a system like the Airport and waterfront car parks, where drivers pay through a ticket and barrier system.

Deputy de Faye said the public wanted a new system for the car parks and that he was committed to delivering it.

‘We have heard what the public want and I intend to bring back barriers in the multi-storeys,’ he said.

‘We do not have firm plans yet and we do not have quotes for how much it will cost, or an idea of when the work will start or finish.’ Transport and Technical Services chief officer John Richardson said no final decisions had been taken, but that they wanted to avoid having manned barriers because of the cost and they wanted to avoid cash payments because of security and insurance implications.
