Charity’s 20/20 vision

Thursday 29th December 2005, 12:00AM GMT.

THE visit of current Sri Lankan Test cricketers and a match against former England and Sri Lankan stars promises to be the highlight of next summer’s season.

A Twenty20 game against a JICC side has already been fixed for 9 July at Grainville.

The match will follow coaching sessions for Island youngsters in the morning and a charity dinner and auction the night before to raise money to further boost the Jersey Side by Side appeal fund – which has already raised over £2 million to help Sri Lanka rebuild after the tsunami tragedy last year.

A major sponsor – PricewaterhouseCoopers – has already been found.

But Wayne Gallichan, who is organising the weekend, said more sponsors are being sought.

Said Gallichan: ‘This year’s visit by Muttiah Muralitharan and Aravinda de Silva was such a success that we thought we’d like to do it again.

Sri Lanka are on tour in England next summer and then go to Holland.

We’re hoping that some of their players will be able to come for the weekend after that.

‘The match will be former Sri Lankan and England players against the JICC.

We’ve not got any names yet but don’t anticipate any problems.

And if people like Murali, Vaas, Sangakkara and Jayawardene can come it would be brilliant.

‘I’ve spoken to Murali’s manager and he’s very committed to making the visit work and very appreciative of what Jersey is doing – last year we raised £32,000 for Side by Side at the dinner and auction.’
