Road Race on the starting-grid
Thursday 29th December 2005, 12:00AM GMT.
A VINTAGE Grand Prix is looking increasingly likely for 2007 now that Jersey Tourism and Transport and Technical Services have joined talks on reviving the International Road Race.
The Constable of St Helier, Simon Crowcroft, has renewed calls to revive the race after seeing more than 100 vintage cars line up for the Boxing Day tour of the parish churches.
He officially launched the Boxing Day tour, and said that after seeing the reaction from residents and tourists he was more convinced than ever that the race should go ahead.
‘There were a lot of spectators, and it was a very good event for St Helier and the Island,’ said the Constable.
‘It goes to show how exciting an opportunity the International Road Race is if we can make it happen in 2007.’ A steering group has been set up to revive the race, which began 60 years ago but ended in 1952 after a 1949 crash killed three people.
