A battle date to remember
Saturday 31st December 2005, 12:00AM GMT.
THE 225th anniversary of the last battle to be fought on British soil, the Battle of Jersey, will be celebrated next week.
On the actual anniversary, Friday, St Helier will hold a vin d’honneur and the Jersey Heritage Trust will present a talk about the battle.
Both take place at the Town Hall.
In Grouville, where the French landed and were finally repelled, a remembrance ceremony will be held on Saturday morning at the memorial to seven Grenadiers who died fighting at La Rocque.
The Constable of St Helier, Simon Crowcroft, said it was right to mark the battle in some form because of its historical importance.
Two years ago he was instrumental in a re-enactment which took place in the Royal Square, where the battle was fought.
This attracted a crowd of about 400 and included the Jersey Arts Centre and Jersey Heritage Trust inviting the public to recreate the J S Copley’s painting ‘The Death of Major Peirson.’ Mr Crowcroft said a repeat performance had been ruled out.
