Competitive diving killed off by lack of coaching

Saturday 31st December 2005, 12:00AM GMT.

COMPETITIVE diving has stopped in Jersey because there are no qualified coaches available.

Aquasplash at the St Helier waterfront has the facilities but for insurance reasons cannot allow them to be used until recognised teaching qualifications are obtained.

And two months after children turned up at the centre to find that training had been cancelled, the situation remains the same.

With a history dating back to the early 1900s, when divers competed at the Havre des Pas pool, the sport of diving in Jersey can boast a number of impressive achievements.

The earliest of these include George Yvon of Jersey, who represented Britain in the 1912 and 1920 Olympics, and Dot Macready, winner of the British Empire (now Commonwealth Games) Ladies High Diving Championships in 1934.

There have been further and more recent representation by Jersey divers in Olympic and Commonwealth Games.

But the future does not look so bright for the Jersey Diving Club, which is affiliated to the Jersey Swimming Club, and previously trained at the Fort Regent pool until its closure last year.
