Hospital security given a check-up
Wednesday 4th January 2006, 12:00AM GMT.
A REVIEW of security at the General Hospital has been launched following the raid there before Christmas when dangerous drugs were snatched.
The raid on Plémont Ward in which heroin derivatives and similar drugs were allegedly stolen when a locked drugs cabinet was wrenched off a wall took place on the evening of Tuesday 21 December.
Five men were later charged in connection with the incident.
Health Minister Senator Stuart Syvret said that the security on that evening was in line with standard requirements.
‘The drugs were in a locked box bolted to the wall, and it is obviously very unusual that people should come in and smash the equipment,’ he said.
Security cameras had been helpful with the investigation, he said.
In the light of the incident a review of all security measures at the hospital would be undertaken.
‘Obviously, there needs to be a balance in keeping the hospital a friendly place with a good atmosphere and ready access with the need for continued security,’ he said.
