More Islanders could be MBEs, say singers

THE music-lovers whose nomination led to choir conductor Nick Cabot becoming an MBE are encouraging people to put forward the names of others deserving recognition.

Mr Cabot, who is the conductor of both the Harmony Men and Jersey Island Singers, is also choirmaster and organist for the choir at Holy Trinity Church.

Added to that, he conducts the chorus for the Jersey Symphony Orchestra and co-ordinates the Jersey International Choir Festival.

It was Mary Burnett, who sings in the chorus of the JSO, who first decided that Mr Cabot was worthy of an honour because of his commitment, enthusiasm and pure dedication to music and those who enjoyed it.

‘I discreetly mentioned to several chorus singers and others that he deserved an award.

Everyone agreed but no one seemed to know how to go about it,’ she said.

When telephoning Government House, she was advised by the Lieut-Governor’s private secretary, Lt-Col Charles Woodrow, how to go about it and was sent an application form.
