Trinity leave it late
Monday 9th January 2006, 12:00AM GMT.
TRINITY overturned a one-goal deficit to beat St Brelade 2-1 and join Jersey Scottish in joint top spot in the Coca-Cola Combination Division I championship.
The Saints belied their lowly status and some stout defending and excellent goalkeeping from Michael de la Cour almost shocked the title challengers who scored twice in the final 20 minutes.
Trinity midfielder Jon Fitzmaurice said: ‘It was certainly an after-Christmas game for us – we were awful first half and an error in our defence led to their goal.
‘But full credit to St Brelade, they fought really hard throughout and their goal was a very good finish.
‘It was certainly an out-of-sorts performance from us and after the break we dominated.
We must have had 15 chances in the second half but it was only in the closing stages we scored through Luke Watson and Dave Le Roux.’ Ben Ahier scored on his début for St Brelade.
Manager Peter Taylor said: ‘It was a terrific performance but sadly no points.
We were all a bit gutted at the finish.
The whole squad played well and there were a lot of positives to come out of it for us.’ St Peter consolidated fourth place with a 3-0 home victory against bottom-placed Jersey Wanderers.
Scott Walsh scored on his first appearance while others were netted by former Muratti captain Bradley Vowden and Vitor dos Santos.
St Paul’s and Rozel Rovers, third and fourth bottom respectively, both squandered opportunities to have taken maximum points in a 1-1 draw at St Saviour.
Derek Johnston was on target for St Paul’s and Scott Healey, with his 14th of the campaign, for Rozel.
