Appeal under way for fishermen’s families
Saturday 14th January 2006, 12:00AM GMT.
AN appeal began today to raise money for the families of the French fishermen killed when their boat sank off Alderney.
Five men died in the tragedy on 5 January, leaving 11 children aged between three and 13 with no fathers.
French authorities now strongly believe that the 15-metre long, wooden longliner was run down by a 9,200 ton Maltese chemical-carrying cargo ship.
The ship did not stop and its crew have said they were not aware that there might have been a collision.
They are reported as saying they saw a light, but received no sonar or radio signals and therefore thought it was a buoy.
