Jersey charity helps starving Romanians
Saturday 14th January 2006, 12:00AM GMT.
STARVING Romanian pensioners are being saved by a Jersey charity’s ‘adopt a granny’ scheme.
It is thought Mustard Seed are the only charity in the world targeting Romania’s elderly.
They have just delivered 3,000 Christmas shoe boxes to Romanian children.
Co-ordinator Rose Hélie says the elderly are often forgotten.
Now 20 Islanders have committed to sponsoring one pensioner each for six months.
Mrs Hélie said: ‘Charities take an estimated 800,000 Christmas shoe boxes to Romanian children.
But there are none, to the best of our knowledge, taken for the elderly.
Sponsors will double their adopted pensioners’ monthly income from £15 to £30.
It will help to buy food and medicine.’
