Black makes his mark in Scotland

Monday 16th January 2006, 12:00AM GMT.

TEENAGE Tiger Ian Black has claimed a fifth place on his Scottish national swimmer championships senior debut.

Black (16) clocked 4 min 44.75 sec in the final of the 400m individual medley at the Toll Cross pool in Glasgow at the weekend.

It was one second outside his personal best but it was still a performance that impressed his AIB Tigers club coach Paul du Feu.

‘He’s taking his swimming very seriously and he’s starting to come through,’ said du Feu.

‘It was a very good swim, especially as he went to Scotland on his own.

He does it every year and stays with his grandparents.

‘He’s done the age groups but this was his first time in the senior championships.

Ian is moving up the ladder and could well be swimming for Jersey in the Commonwealth Games in another four years time.’ All Black’s weekend swims were within two seconds of his personal bests and he was very satisfied with his performance.

He said: ‘I was just happy to go there and swim well.

We’re training really hard at the moment and I’ve been a bit ill too.

But to make the final and come fifth at a national championship is a really big step.’ Black will join the rest of the AIB Tigers squad along with swimmers from JSC and Guernsey for the rest of the CI Championships at Les Quennevais next weekend.
