Waterfront ‘will hit town traders’
Wednesday 18th January 2006, 12:00AM GMT.
FEARS that St Helier’s small businesses will crushed by a lack of parking in town have been expressed by a retiring Procureur du Bien Public.
Stewart Mourant , a retired farmer, also believes the waterfront could be the death knell of many small traders if the hub of St Helier shifts from King Street and the Central Market.
He said: ‘I have always said there is ample room for herringbone, or continental style, parking along Beresford Street and Halkett Place.
Herringbone means parking at an angle.
It would create a lot of spaces.
There could be 20 minute stop-off spots that allow people to nip in, get their shopping and leave.
‘The Central Market is a wonderful place.
It is the one thing that makes our town unique.
People can go there for their fruit and veg and many other things.
But people go out of town for shopping.
Who is going to lug a load of vegetables around? A lot of people do their shopping elsewhere because it is a nightmare parking in town.’
