Early joy for Jersey – but Guernsey U15s hit back hard

JERSEY’S under-15 girls took an early lead in the hockey inter-insular in Guernsey on Saturday – but it was not enough for victory.

Guernsey soon rallied and, with a stronger midfield and defence, pushed Jersey to a 5-1 defeat.

Jersey’s goal came from Gemma Dawkins in the first few minutes when she collected an Emily Habin cross and drove the ball home.

Guernsey replied almost immediately, Jersey ‘keeper Lucinda Overbury unable to keep it out.

And the Sarnians put another two past Jersey’s defence before half-time.

Ready to do battle Jersey created some great chances after the break with Dawkins and Habin combining well in attack and Amber Kramer apparently tireless in midfield.

Abigail Lucas was particularly impressive in defence, Jordanna Wherry made saving tackles as sweeper, Hannah Layer saved a Guernsey effort on the line and Connie Taylor-Cox fielded several shots, subbing as ‘keeper – but the Sarnians were just too powerful.

‘They do have exceptionally strong junior sides,’ said team manager Sarah Smith, ‘but the Jersey girls kept their heads up – and matches against such strong opposition are invaluable in their development.’
