Online petition launched for late-night drinking
Saturday 21st January 2006, 12:00AM GMT.
AN online petition asking Islanders to vote in favour of pub and club licensing hours being extended could move Jersey towards a UK-style drinking time reform.
Inspired by comments from police chief Graham Power, DJ Peter de Momme wants people to show their support for a change in the law.
He said: ‘The idea came about after I read the Chief of Police’s comments in the JEP.
I couldn’t believe that someone in his position actually agreed with the fact that our licensing laws are archaic, and despite being there as a means of minimising trouble on a Saturday night, they have the complete opposite effect.
‘I have spoken to loads of people in the Island who agree, and if the petition is successful we might take it into the clubs and pubs or even on the streets, if that’s what it takes.’
