Reactor plan: No need to worry, say French
Wednesday 25th January 2006, 12:00AM GMT.
A NEW nuclear reactor 30 miles away in Flamanville would be the biggest and most powerful plant ever built in France, say officials.
It would also be the safest, with measures in place to attain zero injury risk should an accident ever occur.
The handful of Islanders who attended a Town Hall presentation last night were assured by representatives from Electricité de France that in the worst case of a leak, radioactive material could not spread beyond a radius of five to ten kilometres.
The proposed 1600 MW generator, to accompany two other 1300 MW generators at the site in the Manche region, would be capable of supplying electricity to 1.5 million people.
EDF officials Joel Dogue and Vincent Delcroix said that the presentation last night was part of an important public debate across France and in the Channel Islands.
