Rovers make Scots work hard for victory
Wednesday 25th January 2006, 12:00AM GMT.
CHAMPIONS Jersey Scottish scored twice in the final 20 minutes at Springfield last night to defeat Rozel Rovers 2-0.
The Coca-Cola Combination Division I win lifted Scottish three points clear of Trinity in the title race with each team having five matches to play.
Lee Burns fired Scottish ahead before Ross Crick got their second after a fine run and cross from their right by Dave Brodie.
Scottish boss Bob Kearsey said: ‘Our first 45 minutes were our worst this season.
We couldn’t put three or four passes together and our work-rate was poor.
‘Saying that we must credit Rozel, they were quick to close us down, they filled the midfield and they worked their socks off.
‘We got the three points in the end and that’s what counts.’ Rozel boss Roy Jeanne said: ‘We held Scottish for 70 minutes and I hoped it would stay that way but Lee Burns got their first.
As we went looking for the equaliser we got caught at the back and the scored again.
‘In terms of work rate and effort I couldn’t have asked for more from my players.
‘We’ve had two tough games, last Saturday Guernsey’s leaders Belgraves beat us on penalties in the WJ Collins Trophy and three days later we push Jersey’s champions hard.
‘Two very encouraging performances from us.’
