The day I met Monty!

WHEN Claire Reid booked to go to see her pal in Dubai she never dreamed she would end up playing golf with the European Tour superstars.

But that is what happened after she won an internet competition with the prize a slot in the Abu Dhabi pro-am before the first event on this year’s Tour got underway last week.

And not only did the Royal Jersey member play in a foursome led by British pro David Lynn, she also won a prize for the longest drive by a lady which was presented to her by Ryder Cup star and European No 1 Colin Montgomerie on a glittering night at the world-famous seven-star Emirates Palace Hotel.

Claire, the marketing manager for Abacus Financial Services, had arranged to go to visit fellow Royal Jersey player Jenny Carnegie who is working in Dubai.

‘I was going to be there while the tournament was being played and saw a competition to play in the pro-am.

I just had to answer one golf question.

So I entered and then was amazed when they told me that I’d won a few days before I left.

I was thrilled but a bit terrified as well – I flew out last Tuesday and played the next day.’ Claire, a 25-handicapper, played in a foursome with Lynn and two other amateurs – one had paid £2,000 for the privilege – and had four net birdies in her round.

They came in ten under par over the 18 holes and finished 18th out of 30 teams in a competition that was won by Montgomery’s team.

Her prize-winning drive came on the par five second hole when she hit her tee shot 225 yards.

And in the evening she had to go onto the hotel stage to receive her prize of a lob wedge from Montgomerie, Ian Poulter and Chris DiMarco – who went on to win the tour event.

Then when the serious business of the tour match started Claire helped with the marshalling, accompanying Montgomerie, Vijay Singh and Sergio Garcia around the course.

‘The whole thing was a wonderful experience,’ said Claire when she arrived back in the Island this week.

‘I never imagined I’d ever play in an event like this.

Hopefully my game will have improved – it certainly gives you a lot to think about.’
